Blocking (Solid Bridging)
Short pieces of lumber installed perpendicular between joists or studs to prevent rotation, transfer loads, provide nailing surfaces, or serve as fire stops.
In Detail
Blocking serves multiple purposes: lateral bracing (prevents joist rollover at bearing points), fire stopping (slows fire spread in wall and floor cavities), load distribution (spreads point loads to adjacent members), and nailing support (provides attachment for edges of subfloor, drywall, or sheathing). Typically cut from the same lumber size as the joists. Required at bearing points, mid-span for joists over 12 feet, and between studs for shear wall attachment.
