Egress Window

A window meeting minimum size requirements (5.7 sq ft opening, 20" min width, 24" min height) that serves as an emergency escape route from bedrooms and basements.

In Detail

IRC R310 requires egress windows in every sleeping room and habitable basement space. The window must have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 sq ft (5.0 sq ft at grade floor), at least 20" wide and 24" tall. The bottom of the opening must be no more than 44" above the finished floor. Basement egress windows require a window well if below grade, with minimum dimensions of 36" × 36" clear and a step system or ladder if the well exceeds 44" deep.
