Grade Stamp
An ink mark on lumber identifying the species, grade, moisture content, and the grading agency. Required by code for structural lumber — unstamped lumber cannot be used for structural purposes.
In Detail
A grade stamp includes: grading agency logo (e.g., SPIB, WWPA, NLGA), species or species group (DF, SPF, SYP), grade (Select Structural, No.1, No.2, No.3/Stud), moisture content at time of grading (S-Dry, S-GRN, MC15, KD-HT), and mill number. Inspectors verify grade stamps on framing walks.
