Load-Bearing Wall

A wall that transfers structural loads from above (roof, upper floors) down to the foundation. Cannot be removed without providing alternative support.

In Detail

Load-bearing walls carry dead loads (structure weight) and live loads (occupants, furniture, snow) through the building to the foundation. They typically run perpendicular to floor joists. Removal requires an engineer-designed beam and posts to carry the redistributed load.
