Southern Yellow Pine (SYP)

A group of pine species (Loblolly, Longleaf, Shortleaf, Slash) grown in the southeastern U.S., prized for high strength, stiffness, and excellent nail-holding. The dominant species for pressure-treated lumber.

In Detail

SYP has the highest specific gravity of common softwood framing species, giving it superior fastener holding and bending strength. Its open-cell structure accepts preservative treatment more uniformly than most species. It's graded under SPIB (Southern Pine Inspection Bureau) rules. Common grades: Select Structural, No.1, No.2, No.3/Stud.
