Deck Framing Best Practices

Intermediate Level

Build a solid deck frame: ledger attachment, beam sizing, joist layout, post-to-beam connections. Covers IRC deck provisions and AWC DCA6.

Materials Needed

Note

Deck ledger is the most critical connection. Use 1/2" lag screws or through-bolts per IRC Table R507.9.1.3(1). Nails are NOT permitted.

Note

All hardware touching ACQ lumber must be HDG (G185) or stainless. Standard hardware corrodes and fails.

Planning

Before cutting, determine: ledger or freestanding, joist span/spacing, beam size, post spacing, footing depth, stair locations.

Footings & Posts

Footings below frost line. Concrete tube forms plumb. Post bases anchored. 6×6 posts for heights over 4 feet.

Joist Layout

16" OC standard; composite/hardwood may require 12" OC. Joist hangers at ledger. Blocking at beam bearing.
