Lumber Storage & Handling Best Practices

Beginner Level

Proper lumber storage prevents warping, checking, and moisture damage. Stacking, stickering, and site storage techniques for professional framers.

Materials Needed

Note

Never store lumber directly on the ground — use blocks or pallets at least 4" above grade.

Note

Use stickers between every layer, aligned vertically, to allow air circulation and prevent warping.

Why Proper Storage Matters

Improper storage accounts for more material waste on jobsites than any other single factor. Warped studs, cupped decking, and delaminated sheathing trace back to poor handling.

Stacking Techniques

Stack flat with stickers every 24" OC, aligned vertically. Top with heaviest material for uniform pressure. Group by dimension.

Moisture Management

Keep sheet goods flat under breathable cover. Loose tarps with air gaps — tight tarps trap moisture and grow mold. Never store panels on edge long-term.
