Sheet Good Selection Mistakes

Beginner Level

Wrong panel in the wrong place causes expensive callbacks. Which sheet goods belong where and common errors.

Materials Needed

Note

Interior-rated plywood must never be used for exterior sheathing. It delaminates when exposed to moisture.

Note

OSB edge swell is permanent. Sand flat before flooring or you'll telegraph ridges through carpet and vinyl.

Interior Panels Outdoors

Exposure 1 panels handle brief construction exposure; Exterior panels handle permanent weather. Match the rating to the application.

Wrong Span Rating

32/16 means 32" rafters OR 16" floor joists. Exceeding the rated span causes bouncy, deflecting surfaces.

Missing Expansion Gaps

All panels expand with moisture. Leave 1/8" gaps — use panel clips for roofs or a 10d nail as a spacer.
