Common siding errors causing water damage and premature replacement: clearances, nailing, and flashing integration.

Materials Needed

Note

Fiber cement must be 6" minimum above grade, 1–2" above roofs. Ground contact wicks moisture and voids warranty.

Note

Drive nails 1" from ends, 3/4" from edges to prevent splitting.

Siding Too Close to Grade

Every manufacturer requires 6" clearance from siding to finished grade. Prevents splash-back, allows termite inspection.

Caulking Instead of Flashing

Caulk degrades in UV within 5–10 years. Butt joints need H-moldings or metal splines. Caulk supplements — never replaces — mechanical flashings.
