Subfloor Installation Best Practices

Beginner Level

Install a squeak-free subfloor: panel layout, adhesive application, fastening patterns, and gap management.

Materials Needed

Note

Construction adhesive on joist tops before panels is the #1 way to eliminate floor squeaks.

Note

Leave 1/8" expansion gap between panels, 1/4" at walls. Tight-butted panels buckle.

Choosing Your Panel

23/32" T&G Sturd-I-Floor rated 24 OC is standard. AdvanTech for superior moisture resistance.

Layout

Start at exterior wall, tongue side facing room. Stagger end joints 4–6 feet. Long edges on joist centers.

Fastening

8d ring-shank nails or #8×2" screws at 6" OC edges, 12" OC field. For I-joists, stay within center 3/4 of flange width.
