Substrate
The underlying surface to which an adhesive, sealant, coating, or finish material is applied.

Substrate compatibility determines adhesive/sealant selection. Porous substrates (wood, concrete, masonry) bond well with polyurethane and PVA adhesives. Non-porous substrates (glass, metal, tile) require silicone or modified-silicone sealants. Surface preparation (cleaning, priming) is critical for adhesion to any substrate.
