Open Time

The window after applying adhesive during which the bond surfaces must be joined before the adhesive skins over and loses bonding ability.

Open time varies by adhesive type, temperature, and humidity. Standard construction adhesive: 10–15 min. Extended open-time formulas: 30+ min. PVA wood glue: 5–10 min. Polyurethane adhesive: 15–20 min. Working outside the open time produces cold joints with dramatically reduced bond strength.
